How a session works

01 · Heat

Sit in the löyly

The wood-fired stove, the kiuas, heats the stones, and water on the stones makes the soft steam the Finns call löyly. Stay in the heat for as long as it feels good.

02 · Dip

Walk into the lake

The lake is a few steps from the sauna. Our team supervises lake access from the jetty throughout. A toe-in or a watering-can pour counts.

03 · Rest

Then go again

A typical fifty minutes goes round more than once: heat, dip, rest, repeat. Bring two towels and a warm drink for after, and stay for a chat on the bench.

Who you’ll meet

“You don’t see a grumpy open water swimmer, and you don’t see a grumpy sauna-goer. There’s a magic about that.”

Gareth, speaking to the Teesdale Mercury

Claire and Gareth run Elements beside the lake. No screens, just people chatting. On the bench you’ll meet open water swimmers, sauna regulars and people on their first dip. We work with a few partners too:

  • Dyane’s Wild Dip & Swim Therapy
  • Barnard Castle Tai Chi Qigong
  • Seasonal retreats
